My Year Taking Our Household to Zero Waste

Posted on: January 21, 2021

“By 2050, plastic in the ocean will outweigh fish. 170 million tons of plastic already fill the world's oceans. 8 Million Tons of plastic enter the oceans each year. That’s like emptying a garbage truck of plastic into an ocean every minute”

  • Blueland - I’ve used Blueland products for a year now and find the cleaning products outstanding and more affordable than anything available. Their blog is fantastic for helpful tips!
  • Ridwell - I paid $120 for an entire year of pickup service at my home for plastic bags, lightbulbs, batteries, clothes, and featured items that vary. Once last year I spent $10 for them to pick up a HUGE bag of Styrofoam from packaging
  • Loads of items can be recycled via this hub

  • Hipposak plant-based garbage bags
  • Blueland cleaning products
  • Scotch-Brite greener cleans scrubbing sponges make from plants
  • Offer Up (or your favorite version) app for reusing, rehoming, and creating beautiful places without buying new
  • Reusable cloth bags for grocery that hopefully I’ll be allowed to use again one day soon
  • Britta pitchers and filters
  • Who Gives a Crap brand toilet paper, tissue, and towels that are made from bamboo and donate 50% of the profit to build toilets around the world

There are many sources jumping on the consumer bandwagon to make comfy mattresses that aren’t toxic, off-gas fire retardant chemicals, and harbor dust mites.

“52 percent of all garments produced contain polyester, a polymer, and synthetic fiber. 70 million oil barrels are used annually to produce polyester, and more than 85 percent of polyester and other cheap synthetic fibers end up in landfills. This PET plastic takes 200 years to decompose, so making careful clothing choices for you and your family can have a huge impact, and driven by the consumer, could affect the biggest positive change”

  • Patagonia- is the first company I know of that offering a new program called Worn Wear where you can recycle your worn items, or buy worn items, reducing consumption and getting more out of what we have. They also provide a tracking source for their down coats, assuring you are buying from an ethical farm that treats the geese humanely.
  • Fjall Raven- You know those wildly popular fur puffs on the top of the knit caps you see everywhere? That fur is from the arctic fox, an endangered animal. This Swedish company created the arctic fox trust designed to protect wildlife. I love my winter coat, the warmest one I’ve ever had, which is made from recycled plastic bottles.
  • Pact-Underwear/bed & bath “Everything we make at Pact starts with Earth’s Favorite™ Fiber, Organic Cotton. Growing cotton organically saves vast amounts of water and uses no toxic chemicals.”

  • Allbirds-I love these sustainable shoes, made from Merino wool. They also have a reuse “souls4souls” where used shoes can find new life around the world. I can get behind this Australian company that says, “a certified B Corp, we do business differently. The environment is a stakeholder here, and how we treat it is just as important as the bottom line” They offer plastic-free apparel from t-shirts and underwear to coats and sweaters.
  • Nothing New-Sneakers, made from nothing new!
  • Flip Flops-

  • Toothpaste: We LOVE Uncle Harry’s that has zero harmful chemicals, cleans better than any toothpaste, and comes in a glass jar from Redmond, WA
  • Deodorant: Humankind in a reusable one-time purchase container where I’ll order refills. All packaging is zero carbon and recyclable.
  • Shaver- No more plastic razors thanks to Leaf “Over 50,000 Leaf Shave users will keep 1.5 million disposable plastic razors out of landfill this year. We are incredibly proud of that.”
  • Dental Floss- We LOVE silk floss by Bambo. We order refills that arrive in paper for the small glass dispenser
  • Shampoo/Conditioner- Plus face wash, I get refills from Public Goods but there are choices everywhere!
  • Sonic Toothbrush- I’m looking forward to replacing my plastic sonic toothbrush with a bamboo one made by Pearl Bar Shop
  • Kooshoo- are the best hair ties I’ve ever used and are plastic FREE, organic, natural, fair trade, solar-powered, hand died, ethically operated and hail from Canada.
  • Contact Lenses-
  • Sun & Blue Light Glasses- 100% compostable
  • Eyeglasses- “All our Eco Eyes frames are environmentally friendly.  We have a selection of bioplastics, sustainable woods, ocean plastics, hand-assembled, BPA and phthalate-free acrylics, and cotton acetates.  With every frame sold we plant 5 trees.”
